Nissan X-Trail 2024 India Review: Good, But Not Good Enough!

In a blockbuster move, Nissan has showcased three global models in India – the Juke, Qashqai and X-Trail. Of these, the X-Trail will be the first to be launched after testing in local conditions.
You might have never heard of this SUV before, but the second-generation X-Trail was sold in India for a brief period. It’s making a comeback with the fourth-generation version, and here’s all you need to know about it:
The new X-Trail is sharply designed with appealing aesthetics that make it seem smaller in pictures. However, at 4,681mm long, it’s just a few millimetres shy of the Skoda Kodiaq’s length. The X-Trail will have a seven-seater and a five-seater layouts, depending on the variant.
At the front, it has large split LED headlights with DRLs in the top part and a front grille reminiscent of the existing Kicks SUV. Viewed from the side, the SUV has a cab-forward aesthetic with large windows and a strong shoulder line, with a broad C-pillar that reminds us of the MG Gloster. Overall, the X-Trail looks well designed and should appeal to the majority of buyers and onlookers.
The rear-end styling feels even more modern and stylish with its layered tailgate design and chunky lower-skid plate.
Inside, the international-spec 2022 X-Trail has a 10.8-inch head-up display (HUD) and a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation display for the driver. Its 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and comes with a premium Bose sound system.
Other features include wireless phone charging, tri-zone AC, gesture-controlled tailgate, powered front seats, Nissan Connect connected car tech and a panoramic sunroof.
The X-Trail should also come with advanced driver assistance features (ADAS) under the Nissan ProPilot Assist suite, such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, a 360-degree camera and auto emergency braking.
The X-Trail gets a variety of engine options depending on the market. In select countries, the SUV comes with a 163PS, 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine paired with a mild-hybrid system as standard. This powertrain is automatic-only with no all-wheel-drive (AWD) option. Apart from the mild-hybrid, the X-Trail also gets a strong, self-charging hybrid option.
Overseas, Nissan’s e-Power hybrid system comes with two-wheel drive and all-wheel-drive layouts with a combined output of over 200PS. It remains to be seen which powertrain combination(s) will be offered on the India-spec X-Trail.

The Nissan X-Trail is currently in the testing phase for the Indian market and we expect it to arrive after mid-2023. However, given that it’ll be imported as a completely built-up unit (CBU), it is likely to be priced at a premium over its direct competitors in overseas markets, such as the Hyundai Tucson and Citroen C5 Aircross. We expect the SUV to cost upwards of Rs 40 lakh (ex-showroom), rivalling the Toyota Fortuner and aforementioned Kodiaq SUVs.
