The Grand Cherokee, Jeep’s flagship SUV for India, has made a comeback in its fifth-generation avatar after a hiatus of two years. It can be yours for Rs 77.5 lakh (ex-showroom) and is offered in a single, fully-loaded variant. The SUV is assembled at the carmaker’s plant in Ranjangaon.
It would be wrong if it would've been anything less than ‘grand’ right? But we’ve got nothing to worry about because the SUV’s design embodies the term literally. The Grand Cherokee is huge. It has got a big, boxy exterior with the front end sporting the signature seven-slat grille squished between the sleek LED headlights with horizontal LED DRLs placed at the top.
In profile, the silhouette becomes rather sleeker, but the boxy effect is persistent with the huge wheel arches adding muscle. The rear sports slim taillights that connect with a strip of black insert that houses the Jeep emblem on it.
Being a flagship offering, Jeep has equipped the India-spec Grand Cherokee with all the bells and whistles including a quartet screen setup – a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, 10-inch heads-up display, 10.1-inch centre infotainment touchscreen and another 10.25-inch display on the passenger side. Other features include a panoramic sunroof, Capri leather upholstery, active noise cancellation, a powered tailgate and ambient lighting.
It is the first Jeep to be offered with an ADAS suite comprising adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist, blind spot detection with rear cross-traffic monitoring and forward-collision prevention with pedestrian and intersection detection in India. Multiple airbags, electronic stability control and a 360-degree camera are a few other features that make up the SUV’s safety kit.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee gets its puissance from a 2-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine that makes 272PS and 400Nm, paired with an eight-speed automatic and four-wheel-drive system. Its off-roading capabilities are second to none thanks to Jeep’s Quadra-Trac 4x4 system and the onboard Selec-Terrain terrain management system.
Thanks to being assembled locally, Jeep has been able to price the Grand Cherokee competitively. It takes the fight to the likes of the BMW X5, Range Rover Sport and Audi Q7.
