The 3-litre petrol PHEV drivetrain can be had in all trim levels, SE, HSE, Autobiography and First Editions

  • Land Rover has quietly launched the flagship Range Rover with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

  • It’s offered in P440e and P510e variants in the standard-wheelbase SUV.

  • Long-wheelbase Range Rover also gets the PHEV option in four trim levels.

  • The PHEV variant is pricier than the V8 option and retails from Rs 2.62 crore to Rs 4.15 crore (ex-showroom).

Land Rover has silently introduced a new plug-in hybrid powertrain in the Range Rover lineup. The SUV already offered mild-hybrid drivetrains since its launch in January 2022, but the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) offers improved fuel efficiency and even a dedicated EV driving mode for a more refined travel.

Compared to the standard 3-litre petrol (P400) models, the PHEV is around Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh more expensive, depending on the variant. Nevertheless, it still undercuts the 4.4-litre, V8-equipped Range Rover by a few lakhs.

The standard-wheelbase PHEV is offered in 440PS and 510PS variants, but the long-wheelbase (LWB) model only gets the 440PS powertrain. The PHEV is also available in the SV guise, but only the standard-wheelbase version. However, you can’t have the long-wheelbase, seven-seater Range Rover with a PHEV drivetrain.

New PHEV powertrain is petrol-only

You can get the mild-hybrid Range Rover with 3-litre petrol, 3-litre diesel and 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 powertrains. The PHEV utilises the smaller 3-litre, six-cylinder petrol engine, paired with an electric motor, tuned for a combined output of 440PS or 510PS, around 40PS and 110PS higher than the non-hybrid petrol engine. It’s good for 0-100kmph in 6 seconds, with a top speed of 225kmph.

The SUV utilises a 38.2kWh battery pack paired with a 141PS traction electric motor. Despite the added weight, the SUV boasts an EV-only range of over 100km (WLTP)!

The new Range Rover PHEV’s chief rivals are the Volvo XC90 Recharge, Rolls-Royce Cullinan and Bentley Bentayga, but it’ll also go up against the upcoming BMW XM. Later in 2024, Land Rover will introduce the first-ever all-electric Range Rover.
