With the rising demand for SUVs among Indian buyers, there’s no doubt that it has become the favoured choice of consumers. The carmakers have been focussing on pushing more SUVs into the market lately. The month of August 2024 saw some good developments in the Indian SUV market with new launches from Mahindra and Tata. However, it is Maruti Suzuki who stole the show. Compared to July 2024, not only did they beat Tata in this list but also surpassed the Hyundai Creta to secure the top spot.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza climbed up the ladder from third spot in July 2024 to topping the sales chart in August 2024, by selling 19190 units. The Brezza has seen a 31% increase in its sales from July 2024.

The Maruti Suzuki Brezza is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an output of 103 PS and 137 Nm and can be paired to either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. It can also be had with a factory-fitted CNG unit that puts out a slightly reduced output of 88 PS and 122 Nm. The CNG unit can be paired with a 5-speed manual transmission only.
In terms of features, the Brezza gets a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 6-speaker Arkamys-tuned sound system, a single-pane sunroof, wireless phone charger, cruise control, automatic climate control, and a head-up display. Key safety features include six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control (ESC), hill-hold assist and a 360-degree camera.
The Hyundai Creta has consistently dominated the SUV space in India, thanks to its lengthy features list, an upmarket cabin, and multiple powertrain choices. It has always been a popular choice among buyers and that is reflected in its July 2024 sales where it topped the charts with 17350 units sold. However, the Creta lost its crown to the Brezza in August 2024 slipping down to second place with a drop in sales to 16762 units.

The 2024 Hyundai Creta facelift is offered with three engine options: a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine delivering 115 PS and 144 Nm, paired with either a 6-speed manual or CVT; a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine delivering 160 PS and 253 Nm, mated only to a 7-speed DCT; and a 1.5-litre diesel engine generating 116 PS and 250 Nm, available with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The sportier N Line model gets a choice of a 6-speed manual with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine.
Coming to features, the Creta is well-equipped with dual 10.25-inch displays for infotainment and the digital driver’s display, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, dual-zone automatic climate control, ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a Bose sound system. The safety suite of the car includes six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, and ADAS features like adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist.
Despite a 3% drop in its sales from July 2024, the Punch has been the only Tata car to secure a position in this list. With 15643 units sold (combinedly for its ICE and EV versions), the Punch is the third best-selling SUV in August 2024. However, the Punch being a micro-SUV has outperformed its immediate rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Ignis and the Hyundai Exter by a good margin.

The Tata Punch is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine that generates 88 PS and 115 Nm. This engine choice can also be had with a CNG unit with a reduced output of 74 PS and 103 Nm. It can be paired either with a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT.
On the other hand, the Tata Punch EV gets two battery pack options: a 25 kWh (Medium Range) and a 35 kWh (Long Range). With the 25 kWh battery pack, the Punch EV’s e-motor produces 82 PS and 114. The larger 35 kWh battery pack is paired to a motor that generates 122 PS and 190 Nm.
In terms of features, the Punch comes equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 6-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, connected car tech, a single-pane sunroof and cruise control. Safety features include dual airbags, ABS with EBD, a reverse parking camera with sensors, and TPMS.
The Tata Punch EV is loaded with features like a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless connectivity for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, automatic climate control, ventilated front seats, a wireless phone charger, a single-pane sunroof and LED projector headlights. Safety features include six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, an electronic parking brake with auto hold function, and a 360-degree camera with front and rear parking sensors.
The Scorpio has long been one of the top-selling and popular nameplates for Mahindra. In August 2024, both the Scorpio Classic and the Scorpio N gathered a combined 13,787 customers in India. The Scorpio has seen a 13% growth in its sales figures compared to July 2024.

The Mahindra Scorpio Classic is offered in a single-engine option: a 2.2-litre diesel engine that delivers an output of 132 PS and 300 Nm. It can be coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard and comes with a rear-wheel drivetrain.
However, the Scorpio N comes with 2 powertrain options: a 2.2-litre diesel unit that generates 132 PS and 300 Nm / 175 PS and up to 400 Nm with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed AT. You can also get it with a 2-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 203 PS and 370 Nm with 6-speed manual or 380 Nm with a 6-speed AT.
The Mahindra Scorpio Classic comes equipped with halogen projector headlights with LED DRLs, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, a 9-inch infotainment screen (no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto), automatic climate control, cruise control and remote locking/unlocking. For safety, it gets dual front airbags, rear camera with parking sensors and ABS with EBD.
In contrast, the Scorpio N offers a range of modern features such as an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 12-speaker Sony sound system, dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control, and a wireless phone charger. It has more safety features like up to six airbags, electronic stability control, a tyre pressure monitoring system and hill hold assist.
The Maruti Suzuki Fronx crossover sold a staggering 12387 units in August 2024 to crawl into the list of top 5 best-selling SUVs and give Maruti dominance in this list. The Fronx has seen a 13% month-on-month growth from July 2024.

A 5-speed manual is offered as standard, while automatic options include a 5-speed AMT for the naturally aspirated petrol and a 6-speed torque converter for the turbo-petrol.
In features, the Maruti Fronx is equipped with a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a head-up display, a wireless phone charger, push-button start-stop, keyless entry, automatic climate control and cruise control. Regarding safety, the Fronx features 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, a 360-degree camera, electronic stability control, hill hold assist, rear parking sensors and ISOFIX child-seat mounts.
