After taking the wraps of the Compass Trailhawk, Jeep is now hard at work testing the fourth generation JL-Series Wrangler Rubicon on our roads. Expected to be launched around Q3 2019, the Wrangler Rubicon has been spied undisguised previously at a dealership. This time around it was spotted testing on the highway with a full load, which could hint that the manufacturer is testing the engine and suspension performance of the SUV.
The international-spec Wrangler is currently available with four engine options: two diesels and two petrols. Have a look at the table to see the specifications of the available engines in the international-spec Wrangler:
3.0-litre V6 diesel |
2.2-litre 4-cyl diesel |
3.6-litre V6 Petrol |
2.0-litre 4-cyl turbo petrol |
|
Power |
260PS |
200PS |
285PS |
270PS |
Torque |
600Nm |
450Nm |
352Nm |
400Nm |
For India, we expect the Wrangler to come with the 3.0-litre V6 diesel and 3.6-litre V6 petrol engines which is expected to be BS6-compliant at launch itself. Both the engines found in the international-spec SUV are more powerful than the ones found in the current-gen Wrangler in India. The current India-spec Wrangler comes with a 2.8-litre diesel motor and a 3.6-litre V6 petrol motor. The 2.8-litre diesel produces 200PS of power and 460Nm of torque whereas the petrol churns out 283PS and 347Nm of torque. It also remains to be seen which transmission will be present on the fourth gen Wrangler in India as the international-spec SUV comes with an option of a 6-speed MT or an 8-speed AT.
The spy shots make it clear that the design of the fourth generation Wrangler Rubicon retains plenty of its iconic bits. The 7-slat grille and classic round headlamps, which we have been seeing right from the days of the Jeep CJ5 remain here. The DRLs on the flared wheel arches at the front gives it a mean look and the tough-looking bumper, which is mounted high up, gives the Wrangler Rubicon an impressive approach angle. At the side, you still get the iconic boxy silhouette and big off-road tyres that help you to take on any terrain possible. At the rear, the spare tyre is still mounted on the tailgate and new LED tail lamps take position here.
While the interiors of the Indian-spec Wrangler are still under wraps, expect them to be similar to the one sold overseas. The international-spec SUV gets a new dashboard and a three-spoke steering wheel with a sleeker design. There is a more modern instrument console with a big MID taking centrestage. There’s Jeep’s U-Connect 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system as well with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and below that are chunky controls for the infotainment and climate control.
The fourth generation JL-Series Jeep Wrangler is expected to hit our roads by the end of Q3 2019. Prices are expected to start in the range of Rs 60 lakh (ex-showroom pan India). Along with the Wrangler Rubicon, Jeep might also launch the Sahara Edition along with it as it has been spied on our roads before.
