Land Rover has revealed that it will launch the 2020 Discovery Sport SUV in India on February 13. The 2020 update brings with it new BS6 engines, an all-new platform, and modern gadgetry. Land Rover is likely to price it higher than the 2019 model which retailed for Rs 44.68 lakh to Rs 61.94 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Once launched, the new SUV will go up against luxury mid-sizers such as the Mercedes-Benz GLC.
Although it seems similar on the outside, the 2020 Discovery Sport is based on an all-new platform. It shares the Premium Transverse Architecture (PTA) with the Range Rover Evoque. The Disco is now 7mm shorter in length and stands 3mm taller than before. Exterior changes include new bumpers, a new grille, and LED headlamps. Land Rover could give us up to 12 exterior colour options. 21-inch wheels are offered as an option in other countries.
Since the Discover Sport’s width is unchanged, we don’t expect a noticeable difference in interior dimensions. Land Rover says the materials are new. The biggest change you notice is the addition of a Touch Pro infotainment system. It is operated through a 10-inch touchscreen. Steering wheel buttons are now capacitive touch switches. Most of the switchgear and dashboard design has been borrowed from the baby Range Rover, other than the HVAC screen. Climate control switches are now touch buttons on a black panel below the centre touchscreen. A digital driver’s display and head-up display are also likely to make it to India.
You can find either of three engines under the bonnet of the Disco Sport. We expect the same 2.0-litre Ingenium Si4 petrol and TD4 diesel engines to be offered on the 2020 model. The diesel has an output of 150PS and 382Nm of torque in the base tune, and 180PS and 430Nm in the higher spec. The petrol makes 240PS and 340Nm of torque. These figures could change in the new Discovery.
A 48-volt mild-hybrid variant could be offered in India since it is offered on all but the base manual Discovery Sport internationally. It comprises a belt-driven starter-generator which shuts the engine when the driver brakes at speeds below 17kmph. It harvests braking energy and assists when accelerating.
Driver assistance technologies could also be offered in the India-spec Discovery Sport. Most likely is the ClearSight camera which projects onto the inside rear-view mirror. A ClearSight GroundView camera may also be offered. It provides a 180-degree view of the ground under the car. Adaptive cruise control with steering assist, lane-keeping assist, autonomous emergency braking, and driver condition monitor could also be available.
The new tech-laden Discovery Sport is likely to be priced higher than the outgoing model. But don’t let its onboard Wi-Fi hotspot and wireless charging fool you into thinking this is a dainty urban SUV. The Disco also packs in the latest Terrain Response 2 system and all-wheel-drive. It can still wade in 600mm of water. The new updates seem to bring the Disco to Land Rover territory. We can’t wait to have a go in this one.
