In just 55 months Lamborghini has produced its 5,000th Aventador, eclipsing the entire production run of its flagship predecessor, the Murcielago

Production lines at boutique and high-end luxury car manufacturers are a bit different from their more plebeian and mass-volume counterparts. Owing to their low volumes and extremely niche market appeal, the volumes are much lower at the former and the everything is made with painstaking handcrafted detail and finesse that just aren’t seen in regular car factories.

Which is why the number in the headline might not be a big deal for, say, Lamborghini’s parent company Volkswagen, or even our very own Maruti Suzuki, one of the world’s largest car manufacturer by sheer volumes. But it is still a big deal for the Raging Bull.

After 55 months or almost five years in production, the 5000th Aventador, a LP700-4 roadster painted in Rosso Bia rolled off the factory’s production line on 22nd March, already sold to an unnamed Italian buyer. With this, the Aventador has officially proven itself to be a more popular model than its predecessor. The Murcielago, which was produced from 2001 to 2010, saw a total of only 4,099 units made throughout its entire lifetime.

To celebrate this milestone a small ceremony was held at Lamborghini’s plant just outside Bologna, Italy. Lamborghini is optimistic when it comes to the future of the Aventador and "with a facelift still being talked about and probably at least one more special edition", as the manufacturer writes, chances are the final production model for the flagship might stand close to 10,000 units, by the time its replacement is introduced.

The Aventador was launched as the LP 700-4 but was upgraded to the LP 750-4 SuperVeloce soon after. Despite being 5 years old now it is still no slouch as it needs just 2.9 seconds to sprint from naught to 100 kmph and can go up to a top speed of 350 kmph. A 7-speed ISR transmission sends 700PS and 690Nm of torque to all four wheels on the base model, while the Superveloce churns out 750PS.

The Aventador is expected to receive a facelift and at least one more special edition in the years to come, so the final production number will be considerably higher.
