After revealing the BMW i4’s exterior in March 2021, the Munich carmaker has now divulged the electric sedan’s technical specifications and interior pictures. The potential Tesla Model 3 rival will be offered in two variants -- eDrive40 and M50 -- with varying power outputs. It’s also one of the first electrified BMWs to come with a hardcore M variant. Here’s a look at the specifications:

To put things into perspective, the standard eDrive40 has enough oomph as a 387PS BMW M340i while the M50 is more powerful than the 510PS BMW M4 Competition. Performance is quick, with both models offering exciting 0-100kmph times. Also, with a Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) claimed range of up to 590km, they can cover a decent distance before needing a top-up.
When the time comes to juice the batteries up, you’ll be happy to know that the i4 comes with fast charging. One can replenish up to 164km within 10 minutes using a 200kW DC fast charger.
Coming to the i4’s driving characteristics, BMW claims its centre of gravity is 53mm lower than the 3 Series due to the low positioning of its batteries, which should result in better corner-carving abilities as well. The M50 also comes with adaptive suspension, a quicker steering rack, and optional 20-inch alloy wheels, all of which should help make the i4 a sportier car to drive.
The electric motors also feature ‘Near-actuator wheel slip limitation’, allowing for better traction on slippery terrain and keeping the car under control while driving like a hooligan. Also, air suspension in the rear axle comes as standard.
Inside, the i4’s clean and minimalist dashboard is dominated by the twin screens that comprise of the 12.3-inch digital driver’s display and 14.6-inch infotainment unit. The latter also runs on BMW’s latest i-DRIVE 8 user interface and can be controlled via touch inputs or the swivel wheel. BMW has also gotten rid of physical knobs for the climate control, which can be controlled via the infotainment unit only.
Considering that the EV segment is on the rise in India, we expect the i4 to come sooner than later. Once here, it will take on the likes of the Tesla Model 3.
