The brand new 5 Series might be the star of the moment, but BMW India hasn't forgotten its bread and butter sedan, the 3 Series. The Bavarian automaker has added a variant to the lineup, taking the tally up to eight. Called the 'Edition Sport,’ the new variant slots in between the base-spec Prestige and the mid-spec Sportline trims. Its Rs 38.60 lakh price tag makes it the second most affordable (or should we say expensive?) 3 Series you can buy.
BMW says the new variant "amplifies the sporty and dynamic character of the BMW 3 Series." You can spec yours in Alpine White, Black Sapphire or Mediterranean Blue, and have the cabin done in a black/red, black/beige or a full beige scheme.
You'd be left scratching your head wondering what sets the Edition Sport apart - it isn't as distinctive-looking as the top-spec M Sport. But it does get gloss-black detailing, some chrome on the centre stack and red contrast stitching on the leather-wrapped steering wheel. In terms of features, the Edition Sport offers a sunroof and a 9-speaker audio system apart from the usual luxury car goodies that include electric seats and dual-zone automatic air-conditioning. The 6.5-inch iDrive is standard, and so is a reverse camera and park distance control.
The 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine remains unchanged, developing 190PS/400Nm. With power sent to the rear wheels via the ZF-sourced 8-speed automatic, 0-100kmph is dealt with in 7.2 seconds whereas top speed is rated at 250kmph. More importantly, the Edition Sport gets launch control as standard. BMW says that the "easy-to-operate system paves the way for ambitious drivers to achieve optimum acceleration under all conditions". Yeah, right!
