BMW Launches BSVI Petrol Engines And 3 Series Shadow Edition

So far, Mercedes-Benz was the only carmaker to offer a BSVI-compliant engine in India with the recently launched S-Class 350 d. Now, BMW has outclassed its rival by introducing BSVI petrol engines across its product portfolio. This has made BMW the carmaker with the most number of BSVI offerings in the country including the 3 Series, 5 Series, X5 and more.

The Munich-based automaker has clarified that its BSVI petrol engines are capable of running on BSIV-grade fuel that is still sold across the country. So far, Delhi-NCR is the only city in the country where BSVI fuel is available widely. The rest of the country is set to switch to BSVI fuel from April 1, 2020. Since petrol engines need very little modifications to conform to BSVI emission norms, we don’t expect the prices of cars offered with these engines to be hiked.

As far as BSVI diesel engines are concerned, BMW says it will introduce them only when there’s easy availability of BSVI-grade diesel across the country. At present, Mercedes-Benz is the only carmaker to offer a BSVI diesel engine - a 3.0-litre, inline-six that powers the S-Class 350 d.

Apart from this announcement, BMW also launched a limited edition version of the 3 Series sedan. The 3 Series Shadow Edition is available in two variants - the 320d Edition Sport and the 330i M Sport. Key features on the outside include a kidney grille and frame finished in high-gloss black, smoked headlamps and tail lamps, a black chrome-plated tailpipe finisher and new 18-inch alloy wheels.

Additional goodies on the inside include a 10-5-inch all-digital instrument cluster with a heads-up display, an 8.7-inch infotainment system with BMW apps, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and electronically adjustable sport front seats along with M Sport leather steering wheel. Other features include a two-zone automatic climate control, a 9-speaker sound system, rear parking camera with front and rear sensors and cruise control with braking function.

Safety equipment on offer includes six airbags, ABS with brake assist, Isofix child seat anchors, cornering brake control, dynamic stability control and tyre pressure monitoring system.

Engine options include a 2.0-litre diesel motor that produces 190PS and 400Nm and a 2.0-litre petrol unit that churns out 252PS and 350Nm. Both engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic with paddle shifters. The Shadow Edition of the 320d Sport costs Rs 41.40 lakh while the 330i M Sport with the same kit retails for 47.30 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom India).
