The recent spy pic of a G 310 GS shipment on Chennai-Bengaluru highway suggests BMW Motorrad might be gearing up to launch the two G 310 siblings pretty soon

The BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS are the most anticipated motorcycles in India despite facing a number of delays. While BMW had already started accepting booking a couple of weeks ago for BMW owners, rumors suggest that the German manufacturer will launch these bikes by the end of July. And the recent spy pic of the G 310 GS shipment hints at the same.

Though the manufacturer decided to take a top-down approach for the Indian market, the entry-level bikes from BMW is the result of its collaboration with TVS, with an aim to tap into the growing Asian market. These bikes will be manufactured at TVS’ Chennai plant to ensure competitive pricing while still maintaining BMW’s high quality standards.

Out of the two, the G 310 R is a street bike, while the G 310 GS is an adventure tourer based on its elder sibling the R 1200 GS. Although parts seem to be shared, the baby GS does receive longer suspension travel and dual-purpose tyres. Much like the R 1200 GS, this smaller GS gets sharp tank extensions, a beak-like fender and a luggage rack for long hauls.

Both the bikes share the same 313cc, single-cylinder, fuel-injected engine which produces 33.8PS at 9500rpm and 28Nm of torque at 7500rpm. Power is transmitted to the rear wheel via a 6-speed gearbox.

It’s built on a primary steel frame which is bolted onto a rear sub-frame. This two-part design makes replacing the rear subframe a lot easier in case of an accident. The GS has a 19-inch alloy wheel at the front and a 17-inch one at the rear with 110/80 (front) and 150/70 (rear) dual-purpose Metzeler Tourance tyres for enhanced off-road capabilities. It uses a long travel upside-down suspension at the front for which travel has been increased from 49mm to 180mm. The rear, on the other hand, gets a monoshock with preload adjustability. Braking duties are handled by a single 300mm disc with radially mounted 4-piston caliper at the front and a 240mm disc with single piston caliper at the rear. Switchable ABS comes as standard.

While prices are yet to be announced, we expect the G 310 R and the G 310 GS to be priced around Rs 3 lakh and 3.5 lakh respectively. Once launched, the baby GS will compete with the Kawasaki Versys X-300 and the Royal Enfield Himalayan.
