In a tragic turn of events, Ducati America’s racer – Carlin Dunne – had a fatal crash at the 2019 Pikes Peak Hill Climb event. Dunne was riding the new Panigale V4-based Streetfighter prototype naked for this year’s edition of the iconic event. He was the favourite to win going into the event as he was the first man to dip below the ten minute mark on two wheels.
There is no official statement on how the accident took place but according to The Gazette (USA), its reporter saw “bike shrapnel going over the right edge of the road about 20 yards from the finish line.” Apparently, there was an issue with the section leading up to the finish line where there was a small bump near the summit. It is to be believed that Dunne might have taken the bump at speed which could have caused the accident.
Dunne was on the way to becoming the fastest man at Pikes Peak once again as he was nearly three seconds quicker than the course record at the checkpoint prior to the finish line. He becomes the ninth individual to have lost his life at the hill climb event.
