The Kia Syros has been garnering a lot of attention for the Korean automaker lately, thanks to its unprecedented styling and above-expected feature set. While its awkwardly straight rear happens to put it under the sub-4m mark, making it share a place with its sibling Sonet, it carries so much that it is capable of outdoing several models in the segment above.
That said, the new Kia SUV is dressed up in six different variants, two powertrain options, and as many as eight colours to choose from. Now, how much you need to spend for that is something we are waiting for Kia to disclose tomorrow. Before that, if you have any questions about the Syros in mind, we reckon we have covered almost everything about it below.
No, it is neither the big brother to a Wagon R nor the segment smaller sibling to the EV9. It happens to somewhat resemble both of them. The boxy design, taken from Kia's bigger models like the EV9 and Carnival, makes it unique. Although it is an ICE-propelled car, the front end features a blanked-off grille like the EVs, vertically stacked LED DRLs, LED headlights and a restyled bumper. The profile gets flush-type door handles and 17-inch alloy wheels.
The Kia Syros is available in six variants: HTK, HTK (O), HTK+, HTX, HTX+, and HTX+ (O).
It is available in eight colour options: Glacier White, Sparkling Silver, Gravity Gray, Intense Red, Aurora Black, Imperial Blue, Pewter Olive and Frost Blue. It also has two interior themes distributed across variants: a Cloud Blue/Grey theme with Mint Green accents and a Black/Grey theme with Matte Orange accents.
This is the section that makes the Syros a stronger contender compared to any of its sub-4m segment competitors or even the one-above-segment ones. It gets plenty of modern amenities like a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and a 5-inch touchscreen for climate control, a wireless phone charger, ventilated front and rear seats, four-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, sliding and reclining rear seats, 64-colour ambient mood lighting, a 8-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system, sunshades and auto up/down functionality for all windows.
When it comes to safety, the Syros has all the essentials like six airbags as standard, ABS with EBD, electronic stability Control (ESC), a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), ISOFIX child seat mounts, a 360-degree camera, dual dashcam setup, an electronic parking brake (EPB) with auto hold and Level-2 ADAS features.
There are two engine options for you under the Syros’ hood: a 1-litre 3-cylinder turbo-petrol with outputs of 120 PS and 172 Nm of torque, and a 1.5-litre diesel with 114 PS and 250 Nm of torque. The former is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission while the latter gets either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed torque converter automatic.
The Kia Syros, despite sitting under the length of 4 metres, its premium offerings give it a good advantage over the Mahindra XUV 3XO, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Tata Nexon and Skoda Kylaq.
The Syros instigates a lot of questions in mind, first from its very existence – why did it not replace the Sonet and what does it try to prove more in the sub-4m SUV segment? What I see is a rather smart move from Kia to hit the nail hard in the Indian wood. Now that they have two options for Indian customers in the most sought-after segment, also do note that the Syros is intended to do things a notch or two above any of its competitors. So if you are okay with giving in to its boxiness, you have something under four metres that you don’t even after spending more in some bigger SUVs.
Let us know your opinion about the Syros in the comments. Will you be buying one?
