SUVs sell. In fact, that’s the reason why even Ferrari is considering building its version of an SUV soon. But until that happens, the Maserati Levante is one of the two sporty yet luxurious SUVs you can buy today. The carmaker that sports the trident logo launched the Levante today at a starting price of Rs 1.45 crore for the base Diesel. Here’s a look at the variant-wise price list:
Maserati says that the word ‘Levante’ stands for a 'warm Mediterranean wind that can change from a light breeze to an irresistible natural force in an instant.' Hmm... While that may be true with the V8-powered Levante, we wonder how the diesel-powered SUV will fare. Yes, that’s right. We only get a diesel motor mated to an automatic gearbox, for now at least. The engine in question is a 3.0-litre, V6 diesel which produces 271PS of peak power and 600Nm of peak torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Levante has a claimed 0-100kmph time of 6.9 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 230kmph. Furthermore, it promises to offer perfectly balanced handling characteristics thanks to a 50:50 weight distribution and the lowest centre of gravity in its segment. In India, the SUV will compete against the Porsche Cayenne and the recently launched Range Rover Velar.
More than any of the above-mentioned facts, what's more important here is the oomph factor inside the cabin designed by Ermenegildo Zegna, an Italian fashion house that makes men’s clothing. With the Levante, you can rest assured that you are sitting in the lap of luxury inside a cabin filled with premium leather, fine woods, platinum-effect metals, handcrafted contrast stitching, and much more. You also get the option to choose between a Bowers & Wilkins or Harman Kardon sound system. For more details, visit Maserati’s online configurator.
In terms of equipment, the Levante gets Maserati Touch Control infotainment system which is controlled by an 8.4-inch high-resolution screen and a rotary dial mounted on the central tunnel. Other features include an adaptive cruise control, start/stop function, forward collision warning system, automatic brake assist system and lane departure warning, optional blind spot alert, surround view camera and an electronic tailgate. The party trick, however, is the Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) system that reminds you of the traffic signs you’ve just ignored by flashing them up on the windscreen. How cool is that!
