Ladies and gentlemen, there is a new Mercedes-AMG in town! Say hello to the new GLE 63S Coupe that has stormed into India, priced at Rs 2.07 crore. It is the second AMG variant in the GLE lineup (the first being the GLE 53) and the more powerful of the two.
Take a look at the prices of the GLE 53 and 63S:
Mercedes-AMG GLE Coupe Variants |
Ex-showroom Prices |
GLE 53 |
Rs 1.53 crore |
GLE 63S |
Rs 2.07 crore |
As you see, you’ll have to shell out Rs 54 lakh more for the GLE 63S. But all that extra money does seem worth it, considering the performance on tap from the 4-litre twin-turbo V8.
In the GLE 63S, this brute of an engine belts out 612PS and 850Nm. It’s also the first V8-powered AMG (in India) to come with a 48V mild-hybrid system that develops an extra 22PS and 250Nm. Courtesy of the all-wheel drive and 9-speed automatic transmission, the GLE 63S makes the 0-100kmph sprint in just 3.8 seconds! Don’t take your feet off the pedal, and it will hit its top speed of 280kmph.
The all-wheel drive in the GLE 63S features variable torque distribution (VDT) to ensure all that power is used optimally. What VDT really does is that it channels all the power to the wheel with the maximum grip. It also gets a stiffer suspension setup with Mercedes’s Active Ride Control tech to ensure that body roll is kept in check. Last but not least, the seven drive modes -- Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual, Race, Trail, and Sand -- alter various parameters (depending on the one you select), empowering you to choose the kind of drive you want.
But there’s a downside of sorts to all that grunt under the hood. The GLE 63S ain’t the most fuel-efficient, and with rising fuel prices, it does become a concern. There’s a little problem redressal that Mercedes-AMG has done here; you drive the performance SUV in the ‘Comfort’ mode, the cylinder deactivation tech kicks in, shutting down four cylinders for improved fuel economy.
Now, to the design. The GLE 63S’s interior and exterior styling is similar to the GLE 53. So you get Mercedes’s Panamericana grille, an aggressive-looking bumper, and the large 22-inch alloy wheels. Even the cabin -- with the dual screens and sports front seats draped in Nappa leather -- is reminiscent of the GLE 53. Take a closer look at it here.
The new Mercedes-AMG GLE 63S fights it out with other high-performance SUVs like the Lamborghini Urus, Audi RSQ8, BMW X5M, and the Porsche Cayenne. Will you pick this super SUV over its rivals? Let us know in the comments below.
