The first G-Class diesel in India is a more civilised sibling to the bonkers Mercedes-AMG G 63

Mercedes-Benz has finally brought the more civilised G 350 d SUV to our shores at a price of Rs 1.5 crore. This rugged SUV joins the bonkers and physics-defying Mercedes-AMG G 63 in a single trim. This launch comes on the back of the G-Wagen celebrating four decades of symbolising peak off-roading ability for Mercedes. The big G slots at the higher-end of the carmaker’s SUV lineup that includes the GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE, and the GLS. It is also the first non-AMG G-Class in India.  Here’s how the civilised G-Wagen looks in detailed images.

At a glance, the new G-Class retains the 40 year old DNA in respect to styling with the grille and the indicators on top of the front wing. However it does get a different grille and front bumper in comparison to the G 63.

Some nifty highlights in the G-Wagen’s body include a steel frame and a composite body shell consisting of various grades of steel. The wings, bonnet and doors are made of aluminium. It also features exposed door hinges and door handles, which is a signature G-Wagen design trait.

Mercedes will offer the G 350 d with a total of six alloy wheel options, including optional upgrades to 19- as well as 20-inch wheels. The SUV also comes with 23 colour options.

Going towards the rear, it retains the tailgate-mounted spare wheel design as well as the tail lamp and bumper design from the G 63 SUV.

On the inside, the G-Wagen is not only a rugged offering, but offers a host of premium creature comforts. The upholstery is hand-crafted with Nappa leather with powered and ventilated front seats being some of the creature comforts.

Some notable equipment in the G 350 d includes 12.3-inch dual displays, three-zone auto climate control, ambient lighting and Merc’s MBUX infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The company's recently launched ‘Mercedes Me’ connected-car tech is also on offer in the G 350 d. Interestingly, this is the first model to be launched with the technology in India.

Key safety features in the SUV include nine airbags as well as driver assist technology like ESP, traction control as well as lane keeping assist.

Under the hood, the G 350 d is certainly a calmer sibling to the G 63 SUV. It is powered by a BS6-compliant OM656 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engine that produces up to 286PS of maximum power and 600Nm of torque.

The diesel motor is mated to a 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission. Despite it not being as beastly as the, G 63, the G 350 d is definitely no slouch with a 0-100kmph time of 7.4 seconds. Mercedes also claims this to be the most efficient G-Class ever.

It gets additional off-road cred in the form of a low-range gearbox, locking diffs at both axles, and a transfer case with a dedicated off-road mode. This makes it worthy of the Shockl-Proved badge.

With a price tag of Rs 1.5 crore, the diesel G-Wagen is a whopping Rs 69 lakh more affordable than the G 63. While there are no rivals to the G 350 d currently, the rugged SUV will face competition as soon as British carmaker Land Rover brings in the Defender 110 to Indian shores.
