Fifteen years ago if someone had said that the sleek Mercedes Benz SLK sports car would come with a diesel engine it would have been the joke of the decade. Not anymore, with changing times the diesel engine has crept under many a bonnet and now it's the turn of the convertible sports car. Read on to know more about the diesel SLK 250 CDI

Yes, the two words ‘sports’ and ‘diesel’ are causing a bit of a perception problem in your head. Before it gets worse its worth mentioning that the diesel SLK can do 0-100 km/h in 6.7 seconds, so it’s not exactly slow. The 2.1 liter diesel engine packs in 204 horse power and has 500 Nm of torque which is pretty substantial and it can take the car to a top speed of 240 km/h which is not slow at all.

The SLK 250 CDI combines a sports car drive with the economy of a diesel engine. The fourth generation common rail diesel engine has a high pressure rail of 2000 bar, it comes with a dual stage turbo charger. The economical diesel engine with the comfortable suspension makes it a comfortable and efficient highway cruiser with decent levels of performance more than an out right hard edged sports car.
The SLK 250 CDI is available with a Dynamic Handling Package which includes Mercedes Benz Direct-Steer system and Torque Vectoring Brakes and an electronically controlled suspension with fully automatic damping. The Dynamic Handling Package provides more agile handling traits to the SLK roadster with more predictable handling.

The interiors of the car are the same as that of the petrol SLK 350 and the fabulous panoramic MAGIC SKY CONTROL which can vary the amount of natural light into the cabin is also available as an option.

The Mercedes Benz SLK 250 CDI is scheduled for launch in early 2012, expect the car to hit Indian shores soon after that.
