The G-Class is a symbol of opulence and authority all over the world. Mercedes-Benz India has now announced that it will launch the diesel version of the SUV on October 16. This variant will be priced lower than the bonkers G63 AMG, and possibly lower than the Rs 1.81 crore Range Rover diesel as well, making this the more practical luxury SUV to buy.
Mercedes-Benz introduced the 2019 G 350 d globally in December 2018. It comes with a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six engine with variable valve timing. This motor can be found under the bonnet of Mercedes’ diesel cars that sport the ‘350 d’ badge, including the E-Class and S-Class. Power and torque are rated at 286PS and 600Nm, similar to the saloons.
As with any G-Wagen, the G 350 d comes with proper offroading gear too – a lockable transfer case and a locking differential at each axle. This is among the most capable factory off-roaders on sale today. Transmission duties are held by a 9-speed automatic. Even with the retro-modern engineering and 2376kg kerb weight, the G is no slouch – it goes from 0-100kmph in 7.4 seconds, and on to a top speed of 199kmph.
The G-Class got its first proper update last year when it replaced the nearly three-decade-old W463 model. This is an all-new car and retains the body-on-frame construction of the older model. It now gets an independent front suspension and a rigid rear axle. The most immediately perceptible changes in the new G-Class is its modern and luxurious interior.
Circular brushed metal air vents have become a standard affair on all new Mercedes cars. The G-Class now gets a digital instrument cluster and a wide infotainment display similar to the S-Class. It is also compliant with pedestrian safety regulations and comes with top-tier passenger safety technology – in line with all new Mercedes cars.
While those with the means to purchase this lifestyle vehicle will also be able to afford the more expensive G63, the diesel makes for a much more civil SUV for daily driving. The OM656 engine is smooth, refined and quiet. Combined fuel consumption figures of 10.7-11 kmpl (claimed) aid daily driveability. Without a doubt, this is the only way to have a G-Class and still be anonymous. The G 350 d will comply with upcoming BS6 emission norms. Prices are expected to start from around Rs 1.48 crore.
