While we were busy appreciating the new E-Class with long wheelbase launching in India, the German auto giant was introducing the all-new E-Class Cabriolet to the world. This cabriolet completes the fifth-generation E-Class lineup. Set to be unveiled at the upcoming Geneva Motor show, the E-Class Cabriolet is based on a new platform, which makes it larger and more imposing than before.
Based on the E-Class coupe, the cabriolet looks similar to its hardtop sibling from the waist down. The front features a low diamond grille with the headlamps from the standard E-Class. The side features a cabriolet standard flat shoulder line, but with the long boot at the end makes it look elegant. The rear of the car features new sleek taillamps which beautifully flow with the body into the boot. Mercedes goes further to say that "the tail lamps exude a brilliance reminiscent of the glow given off by a jet engine", but we will leave it up to you to decide that.
Inside, it is all a familiar affair. It remains a typical E-Class coupe with similar dashboard and seats. In fact, with the top up, the difference in the two will be hard to tell. It features two high-resolution 12.3-inch displays, one of which acts as the instrument cluster and the other works for the infotainment. The driver can choose from three different styles for the virtual instruments in the instrument cluster - Classic, Sport and Progressive. This is, of course, optional. The standard car gets a 7-inch colour display for the instrument cluster and an 8.4-inch central display screen. These are placed in a single frame which makes it look like a single screen.
The cabin also features wireless charging, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity for smartphones.
Coming to the point, the 2017 E-Class Cabriolet features a new soft top which can be folded or opened in 20 seconds at a speed of up to 50kmph. It offers insulation to protect against heat and cold, heat-reflecting leather and programmable auxiliary heater which makes it suitable of every weather.
The E-Class cabriolet will feature both petrol and diesel engines, including versions with the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive for the first time. Furthermore, all models are equipped with the 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission. The car will also feature four drive modes - Comfort, ECO, Sport, Sport + and Individual where individual allows the driver to configure their own preferred settings. Coupled with the optional air suspension, the new E-Class Cabriolet should be a glide.
There will also be a "25th Anniversary" model which is aimed primarily at collectors. It will feature unique 20-inch 5-twin-spoke alloy wheels, the Cabriolet Comfort package, open-pore elmwood trim, the AIR BALANCE package with the exclusive "DAYBREAK MOOD" fragrance, illuminated door sill panels with Mercedes-Benz lettering, velours floor mats with "25th Anniversary Edition" embroidery, ambient lighting, and the MAGIC VISION CONTROL wash/wipe system with some interior changes as well.
The prices have not been announced yet, but Mercedes will try and position it aggressively against the Audi S5 cabriolet. Also, with this addition, Mercedes now has a total of six convertible models - C-Class, E-Class, S-class, S-Class Maybach, SLC-class, SL-class and the AMG GT roadster.
