Skoda is about to launch the third generation Skoda Superb in India tomorrow. This new generation Superb has already been launched in the European and American markets last year and will now be making its way to India.
Based on Volkswagen’s MQB platform that also underpins the VW Passat and the Audi A3, the new generation Skoda Superb will be more spacious than its predecessor. The new Superb is 28mm longer, 47mm wider and wheelbase is now longer by 80mm. Despite the increase in overall dimensions, the Superb sheds 75 kilos, all thanks to the light weight MQB platform.
In terms of design, this 2016 Superb gets its inspiration from the Vision C concept thanks to which it now looks sharper and more aggressive. It sports the trademark butterfly grille up front that is flanked by sharp looking headlights with Daytime Running Lamps. The bumper too now looks better sculpted than before.
Not that the previous Superb didn’t have a long list of features, this third generation sets new benchmarks in the class. It gets a new infotainment system based on Volkswagen’s MIB Technology, three-zone climate control, panoramic sun roof, leather upholstery, automatic headlamps and wipers, and more.
In the international market, the new Skoda Superb comes with a lot of engine options, but not all of these will make it to India. The India model will come with the 1.8-litre TSI petrol unit and the bread and butter 2.0-litre diesel mill. Both these engines will come mated to a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG box.
Expect the Skoda Superb to be priced in the range of Rs 22 lakh to Rs 28 lakh. In the India market, the Superb will take the fight to Toyota Camry and the likes, but can also work as an alternative to entry-level luxuy sedans like the Mercedes-Benz CLA and the Audi A3.
