Porsche has taken the wraps off the brand new 911 GT2 RS at the 2017 E3 in Los Angeles, the Geneva Motor Show of gaming. The reason for this venue was the simultaneous unveil of Forza Motorsport 7, the hugely popular racing video game made by Turn10 Studios for the Xbox console. And yes, the GT2 RS is going to adorn the cover of the new game, hence the distinction.
Fancy brand tie-ins aside, the 2017-2018 GT2 RS has got a lot of reasons to justify being on the cover of a hallowed racing game. You see, it is the most powerful and extreme road-going 911 ever, and, just like its predecessor, is basically a race car for the road. For Porsche’s latest ‘Widowmaker’ will churn out a mammoth 700 horsepower and 750Nm of torque from its 3.8-litre twin-turbo flat six engine. That’s an easy 85 PS over its predecessor, so yeah.
0-100kmph is accomplished in 2.9 seconds. Now, that might not seem like much, seeing as how the 911 Turbo S already does the same, but keep in mind that this is a rear-wheel drive, not AWD.
It doesn’t stop at the century mark, either. While the last GT2 RS hit 200kmph in 9.8 seconds, this one will reach the same figure in less than nine seconds. Given enough road – or a long enough airstrip – it will go on to breach 350kmph, significant again for a car wearing such aggressive aero bits.
Speaking about aero, the new RS will also produce more downforce from its track-spec bodywork than any other 911 on sale. The huge vents in the bumper and front wings, massive brake calipers and rear wing will generate up to 350kg of downforce to help balance out its unusual 39:61 front-rear weight distribution.
Further details on the new Porsche will emerge closer to its public unveil at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Like all past GT2 RS models, expect this one to be limited production and very very expensive.
But hey, if you don’t have that kind of moolah, worry not, for you can always wrangle it when Forza Motorsport 7 comes out this October, provided you have an Xbox One or a powerful enough PC.
