70 Years Of Porsche: A Brief History Of The 911

Porsche’s made it official. The hallowed GT2 RS has a date with India on July 10. It’s the crown jewel in the 911 range, and is happier being driven around a race track, and not to the friendly neighbourhood Starbucks. And that should tell you a lot about who should be buying one.
The GT2 RS is as track-focussed as road-legal cars can get. For starters, the 3.8-litre flat-six engine has been wrung to produce a whopping 700PS of power and 750Nm of torque. All of that is sent to the rear wheels. So, you better be sure of your driving skills before you hop into this one. But, there’s some relief. You no longer have to fiddle with the third pedal and the car is happy changing gears for you.
To help you clock that superfast lap time, there’s tech like “active suspension management” that adjusts damping on each wheel based on the road/track condition, rear-axle steering, and Porsche’s torque vectoring tech that cleverly sends power to the wheel that has more traction. And, just to make sure you don’t get carried away with all that power, there’s tech like “Porsche Stability Management”, that just makes sure you make it out of that corner breathing, and alive. Finally, all that go power needs to be reigned by something equally potent. No surprises then that carbon ceramic brakes are offered as standard.
Oh, before we forget, it looks the part too. It looks like a stripped out, race-ready track machine. And, well, that’s because, it is one! Weight saving is the name of the game, which is why the hood, front wheels, wheel arch vents, mirror caps and the rear air intakes are made out of carbon fibre reinforced plastic. Porsche has gone to fanatical lengths to shave weight off the cabin too. There are lightweight door trims and door pulls, the glass is lightweight and if you’re feeling extra racy, Porsche will happily leave the sound system and the automatic climate control system on the factory floor.
The 911 GT2 RS goes up against a proper thoroughbred, the Huracan Performante. In fact, it has already managed to beat the baby Lambo’s epic Nurburgring record. Enjoy the video of the lap!
