The GSX-R1000 is Suzuki’s flagship track weapon, but doesn’t meet Euro 5 norms as of now

Reports suggest Suzuki Motorcycles could be updating its flagship track weapon, the GSX-R1000, for 2022. This doesn’t come as a surprise as the litre-class offering from Team Suzuki hadn’t yet been updated to comply with Euro5/BS6 emission norms. The GSX-R1000 currently sits second to the legendary Hayabusa (family name - GSX-1300R) in Suzuki’s GSX-R lineup.

With the ‘Busa having gotten its most significant update yet, the GSX-R1000 has some ground to cover if it wants to become the most advanced Gixxer in the lineup once again.

Family rivalry aside, the GSX-R1000 also falls a little short of its outright competitors like the Ducati Panigale V4, BMW S 1000 RR, and the newly updated Kawasaki Ninja ZX 10R. All three have surpassed the Gixxer in terms of tech and performance.

In light of this, we expect Suzuki to introduce the Euro 5-compliant GSX-R1000 soon, maintaining its 200PS+ power output and packing some crucial updates.

These could include minor styling tweaks (new graphics or a facelift), more advanced electronics (better engine maps and an updated bi-directional quickshifter), and updated suspension hardware and improved brakes (probably Brembo Stylema calipers, same as the 2021 Hayabusa). Perhaps, a TFT instrument cluster could also replace the LCD of the current model. Topping it all off could be winglets inspired by Suzuki’s MotoGP world championship-winning project, the GSX-RR.

We expect the Japanese giant to unveil the updated GSX-R1000 by the end of 2021. It’ll probably reach European markets first, followed by an Indian launch by mid-2022.
