Mercedes-AMG is readying a harcore version of its GT gran turismo that will put out almost 600 PS of horsepower and will be unveiled later this year

There aren’t many who would say that the standard Mercedes-AMG GT is lacking some poke and firepower, but they still are there for sure. The ultimate wet dream for such performance fanatics, the Black Series, is still a few years away, but we’ve got some alternative in the meantime.

Speaking to Top Gear, Mercedes-AMG boss Tobias Moers has confirmed that a more track-focused version of the Mercedes-AMG GT supercar will arrive later this summer. It promised to be fast and pointy, and will be positioned above the current Mercedes-AMG GT S. Setting it apart from the existing sports cars will be a more aggressive body kit and a massive rear wing joined by lightweight materials, a modified suspension and new alloy wheels covering the larger brakes.

Despite a price tag substantially less than its predecessor, the SLS AMG, the GT S is still a firebreathing monster. Its 510-horsepower V8 is powerful enough to hit the ton mark from standstill in barely more than three seconds and it can run an 11.3-second quarter mile. Yet that's still not quick enough for the folks at Mercedes who reportedly have two even-faster versions planned - the GT R and the Black Series.

“The new GT R will set a new benchmark in terms of driving dynamics,” Moers stated. The AMG boss also took time to comment on how the current iteration of the twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 in the AMG GT isn’t being used to its full potential and that the track-focused version will introduce “the next performance level of that engine.”

“It will be faster on a racetrack than even the SLS Black Series,” Moers added. When prodded about the AMG GT Black Series in the works, Moers replied, “It’s too early to talk about that.”

Expect the new Mercedes-AMG GT-R to debut later this summer in international markets.
