[UPDATE: Triumph has launched the Tiger 900 in India with prices starting from Rs 13.70 lakh (ex-showroom India). Head here for details.]
Triumph is gearing up for the launch of its next motorcycle in India: the Tiger 900. The British manufacturer has teased the arrival of the new adventure motorcycle on its social media platforms. The launch is slated to take place by the end of this month. We believe Triumph is planning to ride in three variants for now (base, GT Pro and Rally Pro) and then another one (either the GT or the Rally) at a later stage. We expect Triumph to price the base Tiger 900 at Rs 13 lakh while the most hardcore version could be priced around Rs 16 lakh (ex-showroom India).
The Tiger 900 is distinctively different when compared to its predecessor: the Tiger 800. The new Tiger is leaner, meaner and has a more purposeful stance. The sleek LED headlight gives it a striking look. The tank section, while slimmer than before, manages to accommodate more fuel - 20-litres to 19-litres on the Tiger 800.
The Tiger 900 finally gets a split trellis frame with a bolted-on rear aluminium subframe. This is good news for adventure enthusiasts as in case there is any frame damage, the cost of replacing the entire frame will be less. Nestled in this chassis is a brand-new 888cc inline 3-cylinder engine. Triumph has changed the firing order of the cylinders, with the new 1-3-2 order enabling better low-end pull, more tractability and a new exhaust sound that is more of a rumble and less of the previous bike’s whoosh. Power has not gone up; the new engine puts out the same 95PS as before. However, peak torque has gone up by 8Nm to 87Nm.

In terms of riding aids, all models barring the base trim get lean-sensitive traction control and cornering ABS co-developed with Continental. Electronic cruise control is standard on the all Rally and GT variants while the Pro models get a bi-directional quickshifter.
The road-focused base and GT variants get Marzocchi suspension units while the Rally trims get Showa components. The GT Pro also gets an electronically-adjustable monoshock that allows you to configure preload and rebound settings without fiddling around with special tools. Thankfully, all models of the Tiger 900 get Brembo Stylema monobloc calipers on the front wheel with a single-piston Brembo caliper at the rear.
We spent considerable time with the Tiger 900 in Morocco earlier this year. Head here if you want to read up how much of an improvement the new bike is over the old one.
