It will be underpinned by JLR’s new Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) which is the same as the new Defender.
It could share the 4.4-litre V8 from the X7 thanks to Land Rover’s new deal with BMW.
The next-gen Range Rover is likely to debut in 2021.
A completely camouflaged example of the next-gen Range Rover has been spotted undergoing testing at the Nurburgring. The way this brute of an SUV is getting flung around the track hints at something exciting in store for us. The fact that the brand is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and the competition from Bentley Bentayga and Rolls-Royce Cullinan is still hot should be reason enough for Land Rover to do something for its luxury off-roader SUV.
The fifth-gen Range Rover will be underpinned by the JLR’s new Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) that is lighter than the previous model’s D7u architecture. The same platform also underpins the new-gen Defender. The new SUV is likely to feature revisions in the form of a more high-set bonnet and chunkier front grille while the headlamps could be a little sleeker.
At the rear, the biggest highlight is the quad-exhaust system which could be suggestive of Land Rover’s new deal with BMW. This means that the next-gen Range Rover could feature a 4.4-litre V8 that also powers the BMW X7. For reference, it produces 530PS and 750Nm in the X7 and is tuned to belt out 608PS and 750Nm in the BMW M8.
There have been reports of a fully electric variant in development alongside the mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants as well. The existing fourth-gen Range Rover is the brand’s flagship SUV that has been on sale since 2012. Its royalty has been questioned by the Bentley Bentayga and Rolls-Royce Cullinan in the past few years. Expect the Land Rover to drop that camouflage off the fifth-gen Range Rover in 2021.
