Mercedes-Benz E 250 CDI: 6,000km Long Term Review

The last three months have passed like a breeze and it's time now to bid the Mercedes-Benz E 250 CDI adios. As you might have read in the last few reports, the praises have been abundant and occasional complaints too. But most importantly,  the E 250 has been my home away from home and was a support like the gladiator's chariot all through the monsoons. As the monsoon washed away the last bit of tarmac off the face of Mumbai roads, the poor luxury car (excuse the oxymoron) had to practically go through hell. The soft suspension setting was a blessing, while the low profile tyres weren't as forgiving. 

Cool air-conditioning and excess moisture in the Mumbai air don't make a great combination. Once again, the excellent visibility from the driver's seat made it easy to negotiate traffic (and craters) despite the rain drenched windows and frosted windscreen.

What's disappointing though, is that every time I roll down the window, it makes this squeaking noise. After effects of the heavy showers, perhaps. Another constant reminder of the monsoons is the noise while braking at slow speeds.

And that's it. I can not think of any other negative about the car beside these, in spite of having driven it for close to 6,000km in severest of weather and road conditions. Which says tons about the Mercedes-Benz's solid built quality and accomplished engineering. I'm sure if it wasn't for the German sturdy quality, the car would have started to rattle and creek from all corners.

Now that the E 250 is leaving my garage for its permanent home in Chakan, I will miss small things like not having to worry about switching on the headlights or the wiper. I might have to relearn how to change gears using the gear stick and adjusting the rear view mirror from the glare of trailing cars. But what will be missed the most is the peace of mind that my family had since they knew I was driving a Mercedes-Benz on the expressway.
