Bajaj Auto has inaugurated a new manufacturing plant in Manaus, Brazil, a first for the Indian brand. The new factory will allow them to locally manufacture the Bajaj Dominar range for Brazil and other Latin American markets.
Bajaj’s Latin American production facility spans an area of 1,03,333.5 square feet and has an annual capacity of 20,000 units, which can be increased to 50,000 units. The new factory is up and running in a claimed record time of just one year; the plant construction began in June 2023. Meanwhile, Bajaj has also locked in their local vendors for parts and components.
Bajaj currently sells the Dominar 400, NS 200, and NS 160 (the latter two are sold as Dominar 200 and Dominar 160) in Brazil, which will now be localised. The new facility will also allow Bajaj to bring in more models to market, including the new Pulsar NS400Z, and lower-capacity KTM bikes.
With Triumph Motorcycles, though, the story might be different as the British brand already has a manufacturing facility in Manaus.
Bajaj Auto commands a strong share in the Latin American two-wheeler market, which has been growing rapidly recently. The brand is looking forward to increasing its foothold and the new manufacturing facility should help it price its bikes aggressively. For reference, the Dominar 400 is currently priced in Brazil at an equivalent of Rs 3.83 lakh. Bajaj exports a lot of its bikes to Latin America and other global markets. To put this in perspective, in May 2024, Bajaj produced 2,486 units of the Dominar 400 and out of those, it globally exported 1,812 units. The new facility will allow Bajaj to spread out their manufacturing between the two locations and better optimise its global reach.
With this, Bajaj Auto becomes the fourth Indian two-wheeler manufacturer – after Hero MotoCorp, TVS Motor, and Royal Enfield – to have an overseas production facility.
