Back in the day, when the BMW X7 broke cover, the SUV landed up in a whole lot of controversy due to the excessively large kidney grilles. It eventually did grow on us and did suit the SUV’s macho character after a while. Now, BMW has taken the wraps off the facelifted X7, and we must say it looks much bolder and aggressive than before.
The new split-LED headlights are the highlight here, featuring the twin DRLs at top and adaptive matrix LED headlights down. The lower half neatly cascades down to an aggressively styled bumper, and that, along with the illuminated grille, elevates the premium experience a step up. BMW says this will be the theme for its flagship cars, so the upcoming i7 and 7 Series will get the same design touches.
In profile, the X7 can now be specced with 23-inch alloy rims right out of the factory, lending the macho SUV a perfect stance. The rims also get new design options to keep things fresh. Rounding things off are the new LED tail lamps, which feature a 3D-motif and are connected by a thick chrome strip.
Inside, the top half of the dashboard has been restyled and it notches up the cabin’s opulence. The highlight ought to be the new free-standing curved BMW i-Drive 8 infotainment set up, featuring a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display and 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Since the climate controls have been shifted to the screen, physical controls have been eradicated, and in place, you get sleek air-con vents.
Another trademark touch that has been ditched is the familiar BMW gear lever. In place, you now get a rocker switch to shift between P-R-N-D a la the new Audis or more relevant cars like the Skoda Octavia. Plus, the ambient lighting strip on the dashboard now incorporates the X7 or M branding depending on the trim you pick.
The X7 facelift’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems also see a step up in features, including parking assistant, maneuver assistant, trailer assistant, and reversing assistant. Apart from that, you get the usual stuff including a panoramic sunroof, connected car tech with 5G, Bowers and Wilkins sound system, and active seat ventilation with massaging function.
The engines have been put through the knife as well. So the base 3-litre diesel and petrol engines have received a boost in power. Plus, there is a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 powertrain for those looking for added shove. Cherry on the cake is the addition of a 48V mild hybrid tech which not only aids in fuel economy, but in performance as well by pushing out 12PS/200Nm in short boosts.

The facelifted X7 is expected to be India-bound soon. And these new additions mean it’s expected to command a sizable premium over the current model, which is priced from Rs 1.18 crore. The X7 will renew its rivalry with the Audi Q8 and Mercedes-Benz GLS.
