It has always been intriguing to combine an adventure bike's wide bars, high suspension, and roomy riding posture with the control and handling of a sporty naked. The KTM 890 SMT is being developed to specifically address that void, by combining the fun of a supermoto with the practicality and poise of an adventure bike.
KTM used to offer the motorcycle until it was discontinued in 2013. Spy shots of its test mules were doing the rounds earlier this month and now KTM itself has officially announced the bike’s return on 24th April 2023. The bike’s frame engine and most of the bodywork are straight from the latest-generation 890 Adventure, while the street-focussed WP suspension and the cast-alloy, 17-inch wheels are more like the parts found on the mad 890 Duke.
The shared components mean it’s easy to take an educated guess at things like its power. In Adventure form, the 889cc LC8c parallel twin is good for a claimed 104PS and the figure for the SMT is likely to be slightly above that, but lower than the 120PS 890 Duke R.
The 890 SMT looks production-ready and once launched, will go up against the Ducati Multistrada V2. That said, it’s unlikely to come to India. Here’s why KTM has no big bikes for India for now. So if road-biased big sporty ADVs are what you’re looking for, you can have a look at the Triumph Tiger 900 GT, BMW F 900 XR and the Kawasaki Versys 1000 along with the Italian beauty.
