Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 has a claimed mileage of 30kmpl (ARAI), while the Guerrilla 450 has a claimed mileage of 29.5kmpl (WMTC). We explain the differences between them

Mileage Explained

The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 and the Guerrilla 450 are chips off the same block, quite literally and figuratively. However, their purposes are quite different, and it's quite evident in the way they are made and the equipment they get.

But first, let’s take a look at what's the same between them – a 450cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder ‘Sherpa’ engine – the first of its kind from the brand. It makes 40.02PS at 8000rpm and 40Nm at 5500rpm. The 450 siblings also get a 6-speed gearbox with a slip and assist clutch. And that’s where the powertrain similarities between them end, at least on the spec sheet.

Off-road oriented ADV

With everything the Himalayan 450 has, its ARAI-claimed mileage is 30kmpl (28.5kmpl as per WMTC (World motorcycle test cycle)). However in our real-world test, the ADV returned a mileage of 29.54kmpl in the city and 31.87kmpl on the highway – quite close to what the ARAI-claimed figure is.

However, Royal Enfield hasn’t yet declared the ARAI-claimed mileage of the Guerrilla 450, but says it returns a mileage of 29.5kmpl as per WMTC. There are few reasons why the GRR has a better mileage than the Himmy.

Retro-styled roadster bike

For starters, at 185kg (kerb), it’s 11kg lighter than the ADV. Secondly, RE has tweaked the engine tuning from the Himalayan’s and also altered its gearing (45-tooth rear sprocket as compared to 47-tooth on the Himalayan), to suit the roadster’s nature.

Since the Guerrilla is claimed to have been ‘optimised for cruising speeds’, it should be more relaxed on the highway as compared to the Himmy. Meaning it won’t be wrong to expect the engine on the Guerrilla to rev lower than the Himalayan’s for the same speed. This should result in an increased fuel efficiency on the Guerrilla. With that, we can deduce the Guerrilla’s expected real-mileage to be between 30kmpl and 33kmpl. With an 11-litre fuel tank, it should have a real-world range of about 250-260km before you start searching for the nearest petrol pump.
