The weekend offered a special treat as yet another sighting of the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 test mule on its scheduled test runs happened. However, the easter egg we weren’t expecting was spotting another Royal Enfield breaking cover; one with the same underpinnings as the Himalayan 450, but dressed like a scrambler. It appears the new Royal Enfield 450cc motorcycle will not just explore the Himalayas, but will also have a sibling for the urban jungle.
At first glance, this upcoming Himalayan Scram 450 looks more compact and urban-friendly than the Himalayan 450 test mule, which visibly looks longer from nose to tail. The Scram 450’s profile looks compact thanks to the new, and smaller, 17-inch alloy wheels at both ends, tucked headlight, braceless fuel tank, single seat design and a missing tail rack. In fact, theoretically speaking, the alloys alone should contribute to a shorter wheelbase, reduction in weight and offer a nimbler ride (like the Scram 411’s proposition).
Another key difference between the two motorcycles is with regard to the front fork. While the Himalayan 450 gets a USD fork, this one is equipped with conventional telescopic ones, which suggests, this one will be built to a cost. That said, both prototypes feature a monoshock at the rear.
These differentiating factors aside, the two bikes appear to be the same. The Himalayan 450’s liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine that’s likely to make around 40PS and 40Nm will not only power the Scram 450, but also be set in a similar state of tune. That said, the weight difference should offer a different feel, just as we have seen on the Himalayan and Scram 411.

With the expected price for the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 being around Rs 2.75 lakh, we could see the Scram 450 priced at Rs 2.6 lakh (prices are ex-showroom). Much like the Husqvarna Svartpilen and Vitpilen 250 series, this could be Royal Enfield’s strategy to capture a wider target group from the word go. This Scram 450 will likely compete with the KTM Duke 390 and BMW G 310 R.
