After the 2018 S-Class sedan, Mercedes-Benz has now turned its attention towards the Coupé and the Cabriolet. Much like the big saloon, the updates are subtle enough for a game of spot the difference. Here's what's changed.
The S550 has been replaced with the S560 which features a new 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 engine. The older S550 utilised a larger 4.6-litre motor. The new powertrain is said to be more economical as four of the eight cylinders can be deactivated simultaneously when not needed, allowing it to consume 8 per cent less fuel than its predecessor. For the S63s uses a a handcrafted 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 engine that produces 691PS and 898Nm of peak torque.
The range-toppers of the lineup, the AMG S65 Coupé and Cabriolet, is still powered by the twin-turbocharged, 6.0-litre, V12 engine from the sedan. It delivers 638PS and 999Nm of torque, making the S65 sprint from a standstill to 100kmph in 4.1 seconds, and all the way to a top speed of 249kmph. If you are one of those enthusiats bothered by the efficiency of large luxury barges, the combined fuel consumption os the S65 stands at 8.39kmpl.
The S560 and the S63s gets the 9-speed 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox, while the mad-hatter of the range, the S65 Coupé and Cabriolet, continue to sport the older 7-speed transmission owing to their gargantuan torque rating.
With this update, the Coupé and the Cabriolet will now get advanced driver assistance systems, new steering wheels with touch-control buttons, and a new widescreen instrument panel display. Exclusive and part of the standard equipment list on the Coupé and Cabriolet are new OLED tail lamps. Not only do they add to the aesthetic value, they also have automated different intensity levels for braking and direction changes based on the darkness or brightness of the ambient light and the driving conditions. Fancy stuff for a brake light, eh?
The AMG models will feature the 'Panamericana' grille design that made a comeback with the AMG GT R. It also gets larger air ducts at the front for better cooling of the engine and front brakes.
The updated models will soon be released for public display at the upcoming Frankfurt Auto Show in Germany. We believe the Coupé and Cabriolet will hit Indian shores by the end of 2018 or early 2019. When they do, expect prices to hover around Rs 2.5 crore.
