The KTM RC 390 really shifted the goalposts when it was launched all those years back, and with the bike all set to receive its first major update, big things are expected of it. Feeding our anticipation has been a steady stream of spy shots of the new bike being tested, and that stream has just gotten longer. The latest pictures show not one but two different test mules, in two slightly different configurations.
Both test mules feature the new design language, and just like the original RC 390 did back in 2013, the new bike is polarising viewers. Gone are the twin projector lamps, now replaced by a Duke-reminiscent single headlight unit housed in a redesigned and much larger fairing. Mirror stalk-mounted indicators are also a thing of the past, with the blinkers now moved onto the flanks of the front fairing itself.
The first test mule features the current bike’s wheels (in orange), brakes and tail section, while the second is rolling on a new rear wheel design (in black) and tail section. A previous sighting showed the front wheel also in the new design with a new brake disc mounting system. The frame appears to have retained its signature trellis construction but will feature minor revisions and improvements. One of the biggest changes is to the ergonomics, with the updated bike appearing to offer a more friendly and comfortable seating posture, in contrast to the outgoing version’s aggressive rider’s triangle.
KTM still seems to be hard at work with the 2021 RC 390, so an official unveiling might not be as close as we’d hoped. Nevertheless, we’d rather the company takes its time and churns out a worthy successor, so we’re strapping in for the wait. We still hope to see an official launch in the second half of this year, at a price tag of around Rs 2.70 lakh.
