Introduced in 1994, the Triumph Speed Triple has been one of the front runners in the litre-class naked segment. Its last iteration, the Speed Triple 1050, has not received many updates in the past couple of years, making it a bit stale in comparison to the likes of the Ducati Streetfighter V4 and the Kawasaki Z H2 (which was recently launched in India for an eye-watering Rs 22 lakh). Triumph will be reacting soon with the new Speed Triple 1200. The teasers for the top-spec RS model have been released on social media with the global launch slated for January 26.
What one can make out from the teaser is that the new Speed Triple will be shedding its bug eyed appearance for 2021. It will get the same brow-like LED DRLs and LED headlamps like the updated Street Triples (you can read our experience with the mid-spec Street Triple R here). It is slightly refreshing to look at the new face as the bug eyes had clearly gone out of fashion. We did know this was going to be one of the more obvious changes as the new face was seen on the test mule spotted in July last year.
Another big change expected is a larger motor. The 1,050cc triple mill will no longer be able to meet the EU5 norms. Hence, the displacement is likely to be bumped up to around 1,200cc. The older motor used to put out 150PS and 117Nm, which is nowhere close to the 200PS club of supernakeds. With the larger engine, we do not expect Triumph to breach the 200PS mark but it could definitely get closer to the magical number.
Further details regarding the bike will be revealed on January 26. The Speed Triple 1200 will be brought to India and we should get exact details closer to the reveal date. The response to the 2014 model was not fantastic, with Triumph discontinuing the bike in 2016. Let’s hope the new Triple 1200 has a stronger pull in 2021.
