In the latest line of Chinese replicas of European automobiles, BMW’s GS range of motorcycles have been copied by China’s Colove Motorcycles with the launch of the 400X. Yes, the motorcycle bears an uncanny resemblance to the BMW F 750 GS with the front fascia reminding you of the G 310 GS. And the flattery does not end there, Colove has also offered the iconic BMW white, blue and red livery as one of the colour options for the 400X. However, there is more to the bike than what meets the eye.
Powering this ‘copy,’ is a 378cc parallel-twin liquid-cooled engine that makes 36.70PS and 35Nm. The nearest BMW GS rival has one cylinder less and is 2.7PS as well as 7Nm shy in terms of output numbers. We figure that since it is a parallel-twin engine powered motorcycle, the 400X would also not be excessively vibey like the baby GS.
The diamond-type frame is suspended by means of a 41mm USD fork and a link-type monoshock, with 165mm and 160mm travel respectively. Since it is primarily a road-biased adventure motorcycle, it gets a 19-/17-inch alloy rim setup which comes shod with dual-purpose rubber. It also gets 296mm dual rotors with dual-piston calipers acting on the front wheel and a 240mm disc with a single-piston caliper at the rear.
As mentioned previously, apart from the front end which looks like the G 310 GS, the 400X looks very much like the F 750 GS. In fact, the length, width and breadth of this Chinese bike are larger than the more adventurous F 850 GS. However, this bike is lighter (172kg kerb, without panniers) and has a lower seat height of 790mm. The generous 20-litre fuel tank too is larger than all three BMW GS motorcycles mentioned in this story.
How much is it priced at? It retails for 29,800 Chinese Yuan, which roughly equates to Rs 2.98 lakh (without taxes and duties). If Colove was to follow in CFMoto’s footsteps and ever come to India, we are sure that this would be a hot model for the brand. Expect the pricing to be a notch above the G 310 GS. But sadly, we do not feel that this will ever make it across the border.
