TVS concluded the NTorq 125 Call of Design contest today, with the winner taking home a new NTorq 125 scooter along with a cash prize of Rs 30,000. The contest was organised for both design students and automotive journalists from all over the country. In essence, the event was organised to show the creative and artistic skills of participants using the already sporty-looking NTorq 125 as the canvas. It also gave TVS an opportunity to study the designs made by the youth, possibly to take inspiration for its upcoming scooters.
The contest kickstarted in August 2019 and was divided into two phases. In the first phase, participants were selected on the basis of the best 2-D rendition of the scooter and in the second phase, the design students were given a stock TVS NTorq 125 on which they could work on their design. TVS restricted the modifications only to cosmetics, and hence, the bodywork and the mechanicals were left stock in all the scooters. The Hosur-based brand funded Rs 15,000 for the participants’ creations and the upper limit was set at Rs 25,000.
TVS says over 300 students from different design schools across the country and 20 automotive journalists participated. In the media category, renderings made by Bilal Firfiray from BikeWale, Akshay Chitwar from our sister brand PowerDrift and Shoeb Kalania from IndianAutosBlog were selected.
Speaking to ZigWheels, winner of the contest Evanka Thimmaiah commented that the main design inspiration for her creation was the scooter’s target audience - the gen Z. This generation is bold, energetic and she wanted to bring out these aspects and create a striking design. The graphics and the pinstriping have been designed in a way to emphasise the sharp design elements of the scooter. She says the hexagonal pattern of the seat is a symbol of connection - just like how its target audience like to be connected.
She faced challenges such as getting the measurements spot on. It took a bit of trial and error to nail the final design. Getting the right pattern on the seat required a lot of patience. Thimmaiah’s project cost Rs 19,000.
Under the student category, the first runner-up, Anoop Nellikalayil from National Institute of Design, Gandhinagar, won a cash prize of Rs 30,000. Sidharth Sangwan from Industrial Design Centre, IIT, Mumbai, and Sachin Sing Tensing from National Institute of Design, Gandhinagar, clinched the second runner-up position. The two students won a cash prize of Rs 20,000 each.
The finalists, Daniel Ray Philip (Strate School of Design, Bengaluru) and Siddesh Bhogale (MIT Institute of Design, Pune) won a cash prize of Rs 10,000 each. Notably, Bhogale’s creation was inspired by the motorcycle ridden by Indian rally rider and Dakar Rally finisher Aravind KP from Sherco TVS Racing.
TVS also ran an online poll of the ten best designs on its social media handles and Rajat Kushawa from Industrial Design Center, IIT, Mumbai, won the hearts of the audience.
The event was scrutinised by five jury members, namely Elias Abraham (Senior Vice President - Style and Design, R&D), Amit Rajwade (Head - Scooter Design, R&D), Aniruddha Haldar (Vice President, Marketing, Commuter Motorcycles, Scooters & Corporate Brand), Varghese Thomas (Vice President, Corporate Communication) and Muntaser Mirkar (artist and design head of HellRaiser MotoWear).
