Yamaha unveiled its latest scooter offering for Japan in the form of the Cygnus Gryphus. Going by its design cues, the Cygnus Gryphus is clearly a youth-oriented scooter, just like the TVS NTorq 125 Race XP. So we’ve compared the two sporty scooters on paper and here’s the result.

Both scooters have a fairly similar displacement but the Yamaha Cygnus Gryphus benefits from a 4-valve setup as compared to the TVS NTorq 125 Race XP’s 3-valve configuration. While there’s a minor difference in the torque figures, the Cygnus Gryphus makes 1.8PS more than the NTorq 125 Race XP. But the Yammie also weighs 9kg more, which negates the overall difference it may have in the off-the-line performance.

As for the underpinnings, both scooters pack pretty much the same components. But the Cygnus Gryphus gets dual rear springs at the rear as opposed to the single unit for the NTorq 125 Race XP. This should help it combat the payload better. Besides, it also rides on 12-inch wheels (like its rival) but its tyres are a bit wider. This should offer the Yamaha better stability and grip than the NTorq, thanks to the larger contact patch.

The TVS NTorq 125 Race XP not only weighs significantly less but also offers a shorter wheelbase and higher ground clearance. All these factors contribute to better handling and usability than the Cygnus Gryphus. But Yamaha has equipped the Cygnus Gryphus with a slightly larger fuel tank than the NTorq 125 Race XP.

On the features front, the TVS NTorq 125 Race XP is miles ahead of the Yamaha Cygnus Gryphus. The only common features between the two are LED lights and a fully digital instrument console. Apart from that, the Cygnus Gryphus gets none of the connectivity features that the NTorq offers.
Price and Verdict

At Rs 85,550 (ex-showroom Delhi), the TVS NTorq 125 Race XP is a clear winner here. It not only offers way more features but also costs almost a third of the Yamaha Cygnus Gryphus, which is priced at JPY 3,57,500 (approximately Rs 2.30 lakh). That said, the Yamaha scooter remains exclusive to Japan as of now.
