Source: Wikipedia "On a motorcycle, an anti-lock brake system prevents the wheels of a powered two-wheeler from locking during braking situations. Based on information from wheel speed sensors the ABS unit adjusts the pressure of the brake fluid in order to keep traction during deceleration to avoid accidents." To be precise when you apply a sudden brake or hard press, sometimes the brake shoes get locked to the disc plate. Even if you release the brake lever, it will be in locked position and this causes the bike to skid, dangerously!. ABS detects this kind of sudden lock and applies pressure to release the lock using feedback sensors.

An anti-lock braking system (ABS) is a safety anti-skid braking system used on aircraft and on land vehicles, such as cars, motorcycles, trucks and buses. ABS operates by preventing the wheels from locking up during braking, thereby maintaining tractive contact with the road surface.

It is mainly to reduce sudden braking pressure on tyre and slow it down without locking the tyre and making the bike skid
