20+ PS! That's an outrageous figure for an Indian scooter by any margin, and even more outrageous once you consider that the standard Ntorq 125 makes 9.4PS. It is commendable that TVS has been able to eke out such high horsepower from a 4-stroke, air-cooled, SOHC, single-cylinder motor, though they won't disclose engine capacity figures.
Now, while the scooter might look like a souped up TVS Ntorq, we expect it to be a derivative of the TVS SXR 160 rally scooter that the Chennai-based two-wheeler maker has been using for rallies in the country, albeit utilising the new Ntorq’s underpinnings and bodywork. Actually, underpinnings would be a broadly used term -- for a rally, we expect the frame to be strengthened. Another interesting fact is that INRC regulations have a class limit (S2) for scooters between 110cc and 160cc. It does have rally-spec suspension, steel wheels, and sports 12-inch knobby tyres.
TVS has had a colourful history with the Indian rally scene with their factory race team not just racing bikes but also scooters. Scooters like the TVS Wego and Zest 110 have achieved varying degrees of success at INRC. That was, until the Aprilia SR 150 rally scooters raced by privateers arrived on the scene and began stealing the limelight. With these new machines, TVS expects to dominate the scooter scene once again. This year’s INRC will be an interesting spectacle as the factory race teams take on the Italian scooters.
