Water and oil do not mix. Neither does budget and performance. Of course, with a few exceptions.
If you’re looking for a performance bike under Rs 4 lakh, here are our top picks:
2021 TVS Apache RR 310 BTO
If you plan on doing trackdays, the 2021 TVS Apache RR 310 is your go-to bike. For 2021, TVS has introduced a new BTO (Built-to-Order) programme for the RR 310, whereby you can choose from two performance kits: Dynamic (Rs 12,000) and Race (Rs 5,000). Both are aimed at making the RR 310 a better track motorcycle. Even with both kits combined, the Apache RR 310 costs Rs 2.77 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), making it an excellent value-for-money proposition. For a detailed breakdown of kits, check out our story.
Royal Enfield Continental GT 650
Say hello to the biggest-capacity motorcycle on this list, the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650. Its clip-ons allow sportier riding, which, coupled with the 648cc parallel-twin engine (putting out 47.65PS and 52Nm), makes this old-school bike enjoyable. Moreover, it also gets a slip and assist clutch to help with aggressive riding.
The Continental GT 650 currently retails at Rs 2.98 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), making it THE most powerful sub-Rs 4 lakh bike in India.

KTM 390 Duke
The KTM 390 Duke is the bike that truly kickstarted India’s budget performance motorcycle segment in 2014. And after all these years, it is still one of the top picks.
The KTM 390 Duke justifies its Rs 2.87 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) price tag with its class-leading performance and features. In fact, the 44PS and 37Nm, coupled with its low kerb weight, make the front end come up even in the second gear. And all this is complemented by top-notch features like a TFT instrument cluster, switchable ABS, a quickshifter, all-LED lighting, and ride-by-wire.
KTM 390 Adventure
The 390 Duke was such a global success that KTM even used its engine elsewhere. Case in context, the KTM 390 Adventure. Evident from its name, the 390 Adventure is for the wanderers who want to explore uncharted territories.
At Rs 3.28 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), it is the most expensive bike on this list. But it justifies the moolah with never-seen-before bits like cornering ABS and traction control. We did encounter some issues with it, though. Read our road test review for more details.
Upcoming Royal Enfield Super Meteor 650
If you want a performance cruiser under Rs 4 lakh, we suggest you wait a little and get the upcoming Royal Enfield Super Meteor 650. It is expected to be priced at around Rs 3.5 lakh (ex-showroom), making it the most premium Royal Enfield yet.
In its latest sighting, the bike appeared almost production-ready, hinting at an imminent launch. In true RE fashion, it will be an old-school motorcycle featuring a round headlight and chrome elements here and there. Underneath all this will be the same, likable 648cc thumper from the Interceptor 650.
