Less than a week ago TVS Racing announced its first ever ‘TVS Asia One Make Championship’. This was a bold move for the Indian two wheel manufacturer that has strongly cemented a part of its heritage in motor racing. But it seems like TVS has a larger game plan stashed away in its playbook with another strategic announcement aimed squarely at developing motor sports in India. TVS Motor Company has joined hands with Malaysian oil and gas company Petronas to form the ‘Petronas TVS Racing Team’. Yes, TVS, widely considered as India’s first factory racing team, will ally with Petronas to bring invaluable racing experience to the table.
The alliance will have Petronas, the title sponsor, supply its Sprinta range of high-performance engine oils to TVS for varied disciplines like the Indian National Rally Championship, Indian National Motorcycle Racing Championship and Indian National Supercross Championship. TVS also showcased its motorcycles from each discipline wearing the new factory colours. The new livery combines the brand colours of both TVS and Petronas rather nicely.
Petronas has identified India as the largest market for oil and lubrication in Asia. It has been around in India for a while and now looks to expand its footprint and increase brand recall with the help of TVS and its racing program here in India. The partnership will see a five-year tenure to begin with and will be revised depending on the success of this exercise. Petronas Sprinta is now being locally manufactured in Panvel, Mumbai and the two brands will also retail a premium, performance-focused engine oil called the Petronas TVS TRU4 RacePro in India, which is likely to hit the shelves by May 2022.
